Persecutors of Evil Spirits in Bulgariq

Kukeri celebrates the passing of winter and the onset of summer fertility. 

The custom in the Bulgarian lands stems from the Thracians. Be celebrated during the days of the Thracian god Dionysus joy. 

Mummers are men dressed as animals or typical characters (grandfather, grandmother, King ...). 

The costumes, which are covered are extremely attractive. Furthermore attraction, however, they are carriers of certain symbolism.

We start with the mask. Most of the masks are constructed by wood, which is glued colored threads, pieces of fabrics, mirrors and other shiny elements. The mask should be as soon as ugly and scary to scare evil.

Most are considered antique masks representing a ram, goat and bull. Their presence is required in the Mummer's games .

Some masks have two faces. On one side of the nose is a chip and a person is good-humored and the other is hooked nose , his face grim . These masks are a symbol of good and evil, which coexist in the world. Great importance to the symbolism of the masks and colors of the decoration . Predominant red color - a symbol of the fertility of reviving nature , the sun and fire, black color represents the earth and her goddess mother and white is a symbol of water and light .
